"Friends to Lovers" is the ultimate romance trope to read in the young adult genre. It’s just as sweet when you discover how much you fall in love with your closest friends. And it’s even sweeter when you reunite with your closest friends as well. It’s something Liya and Kai will discover as they begin to talk again after so many months.
Liya and Kai have always been friends, until a few months ago. The reason behind their noncommunication with each other is a miscommunication between them. It’s expected since they are both teenagers and expect all of their issues to be bigger than they are.
It’s a bit harsh to say, but this book is a bit too young for me to read. It’s a better fit for younger adults. They will have a better reading experience than I did. I found the characters a bit too childish about their miscommunications among themselves. They could ignore the problem if they only communicated with each other.
While I was struggling with the characters as a whole, I enjoyed the representation of grief. It was beautifully written in this book. It truly represents how much grief can affect everyone. Not everyone goes through the same process; it’s different for everyone. And it’s something Liya will realize as she processes her grandmother's death.
