This book blew away my expectations, especially since I didn't expect so much from it. I typically haven't read sci-fi fantasy books before. I tend to stick with fantasy with romance subplot books, but I wanted to expand my reading genre. And thankfully, I did because this book became one of my five-star reads in October.
Before I rave all about it, I will say that the cliffhanger ending was chaotic and unexpected. I didn't expect that at all, and I am still thinking about it. I don't know what to do until book two comes out. I literally need everyone to read this book so they can share my pain until we get book two.
Besides my chaotic feelings about the cliffhanger ending, let's circle back to the beginning of this fantastic sci-fi fantasy book. It's a bit doozy, but let's stick with three main characters: Chono, Esek, and Six.
Chono - my sweet yet naive friend. You care for Esek so much that you aren't willing to confront the truth. You see, Esek helped free Chono when she didn't have a choice years ago. Don't get it twisted; Esek is ruthless and doesn't care for anyone, so keep that in mind. And it's something Chono keeps forgetting when they are paired up with each other again. It's going to bite her.
Esek - what can I say? This woman is a boss ass bitch! She knows it and owns it. She doesn't care what people think because she will always be ruthless, no matter what. That makes her a huge problem when she is expected to lead Nightfoots. It won't go over well for the kingdom.
Six - may be mysterious, but they definitely have it in the bag. Why? They are two steps ahead of the game, especially since they capture the attention of Esek. They want to impress her over the years, but yet, something changes. Can it be worse?
With all of these characters' motives and flaws, the ultimate goal is either recovering the criminal evidence or exposing the ultimate ugly truth. You may say that the ugly truth needs to be told, but it is worth it to destroy Nightfoot's reputation, which is the key to helping other poorer nations. It's a bit harder to swallow the truth and to know what to do next. It's not going to get any easier as you read more and more in the book.
