Because the Order gets rid of anyone who possesses dark magic in order to protect the Order’s societies
— Abigail Books Addiction

To all of my young adult fantasy readers, this book is for you. It has all the ingredients of a fantastic fantasy read: morally gray characters, endless secrets, shocking betrayals, hidden dark magic, dark academia vibes, and the forbidden love trope. With all of these combinations, you should already know that I need book two, especially after the shocking cliffhanger.

Before I rant all about the surprising cliffhanger, let’s circle around Quell starting the Order in order to avoid being suspicious of her dark magic. Quell has been on the run with her mother since she was a little girl. However, things are getting a little trickier since she is about to be of age, aka approaching her dark magic full force. And things are going to be more difficult when she enters the Order when her grandmother is head of their house, Marionne.

Quell knows that it’s going to be challenging when she reunites with her grandmother, who is the head of their house, Marionne. She will have to do the impossible: hide her dark magic at all costs. Why? Because the Order gets rid of anyone who possesses dark magic in order to protect the Order's societies. And Quell unfortunately possesses greatly powerful, untamed dark magic that threatens the Order. She will do everything to protect herself and her mother by avoiding her dark magic and becoming something else. It certainly doesn’t help that she has Jordan watching her every move.

Jordan is the definition of a grumpy, sarcastic male interested in a fantasy read. He literally has comebacks whenever he banters with Quell. He certainly doesn’t trust her at all, so it makes sense for him to be her tutor and mentor while she is a debutante for the House of Marionne. You already know what’s coming. He is going to start falling for her when he spends more time with her. It’s fate for them.

While I was enjoying their forbidden love, I knew something was coming. Even though I was expecting it, I was still surprised by what was revealed. I didn’t expect it at all. I was totally shocked until the very end. So many secrets were revealed. And so many betrayals as well. I literally cannot wait until book two. I have so many questions that need to be answered. Such a thrilling and shocking adult fantasy read.
